While he is a hunter, Smitty is a scam artist genius. It was the only thing he learned from his father and well he uses them to assist the hunters. Smitty is a fighter and he knows how to box extremely well. He is very secretive over his skills on cooking, playing the guitar and singing. Smitty is known for being able to plan multiple points of his scams at once, remember them and keep them all going at the same time. He is known for coming up with lies and making people believe that they need something that is really crap. Smitty is able to fluently speak Latin (he knows the exorcism chants like all good hunters), and due to his being raised in the area some Shoshone (not enough to carry on a full conversation but enough to count, say his colors, some animals ect). Also due to the climate of Eureka, Smitty excels in being stuck out in hot places for long periods of time. He's skilled at throwing knives, and knife fighting, and normally the knives are silver just to keep himself on the safe side. Smitty is great at card tricks and a skilled poker player but is known at times to cheat at cards if he is running a scam against some one and is playing the role of the distraction. He can pick pocket anyone and any lock.

Picking pockets, running a long con in order to get what he wants that's something he's more skilled at. So much can be said with a face and Smitty's face can do so much talking. He's able to tell when he's annoyed by a simple glare (probably the reason why he wears sunglasses so much) A simple roll of the eyes while his eyes are closed is the sign that he's beyond annoyed and just wants you to go away. The brow scrunch is his typical confused look and so on. If you do something completely moronic, there's the bridge of nose pinch, it's the most frequently seen with new hunters that approach him. There are some where if you have to ask it's best just not to know! But when he's with some one that knows him, Smitty generally has a relaxed look and will smile. He's been known too occasionally.
He's got layers though multiple layers and depending on who you are is which type of Smitty you'll see. The outer layer is the scam artist. He's always playing a game with people and no one is close to him. Some consider him an ass while others consider him protected. He's secretive though and that's something everybody picks up on when they first meet him. They all know there's something else he's keeping to himself. The second layer is for those who have done business with him before and are clients. They are on a more friendlier term with him. He'll joke with them and they'll get a grace period maybe on paying him (nothing is ever free with Smitty...he's gotta eat and live too) Finally there's the third and most protected layer. He's open and these people know about his son, his brother's illness, maybe his father, what happened in San Antonio, and are the ones to help him with scams. They know he likes to cook but they also know he's keeping something secretive from them and not to press it. He gets most of his new clients through this selective group. If he's working with a group to get something ten to one someone of this third group is his main wing person and is always with him if he has to change the plan.

In the hunting world, Smith is a commonly used last name. In the civilian world, Smiths populate the world. Just look in the phone book. So maybe that's why so many people didn't really notice when Deacon Alexander Smith was born to a school teacher and an abusive scam artist. His father taught him how to run simple scams and cons as a kid, he cleaned up with the ball and cups scam, but if he screwed up in the least his father's punishment was worse than when they got a B on a test. He was only ten when he moved to Eureka with his family and for Smitty it was really the only home he's ever known. It was a small town, and for a son of a scam artist everyone knew everyone. It was a chance for his father to start over, unfortunately that didn't happen. Sure he retired from being a scam artist but hitting people...no.
Of course the Smith family had ways of dealing with Ryan Smith's violent tendencies, though Gina Smith refused to leave. Each one had different coping skills. At first Smitty did run his own few scams here and there to get some cash and to try and impress his father. Those ended though when he was taken in by an Officer Shawn McNally, of the Eureka Police Department. Officer McNally became like a big brother to Smitty, teaching him boxing and protecting him when the boy needed it. Smitty never admitted the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father. His sister, Lucy, would disappear for days to stay at friends house. While his younger brother, Aaron slipped into doing drugs as a mean to escape the wrath of their father. They all knew though that when Gina Smith called and said “You need to come home. You're father wants to speak with you now” It meant to stay away and they did. By the age of fourteen, Smitty had been kicked out of the house due to his fighting back against his father.
He found safe haven though by moving in with the cop who later took in Lucy when she moved out as well due to their father. Smitty slowly accepted the fact that he didn't have to be on protecting his sister from some one or the fact that he was always on alert in case he screwed up. The only problem with all the Smith children was the fact that when Aaron Smith finally left instead of going to McNally like his siblings, went to drugs and the streets. While both frantically searched for him, they wouldn't see him for a long time.
Years went by and Smitty attended college with the idea to start his own business in order to educate others about scams and even was teaching young kids how to box at the same gym he learned at. He gave his sister away at her wedding to a Victor Gavin, a historian from Maine (A snub to their father) and took care of their mother when ever she called. He even met and started to date an artist by the name of Maxine Davinport. Life was good.
That was until Aaron stumbled back into his life. For Smitty, it was hard getting the phone call at three am claiming that something was hunting Aaron and the other patients at the hospital's secure floor for the psych patients. Smitty never understood why he accepted the call but he did. After deeming his brother insane, Smitty laid awake and allowed his mind to wander over what could be hunting crazy people. Instead of packing up and leaving the side of Maxing, in the middle of the night, he called his sister who had just passed the bar to be a lawyer. After a three hour call with her, Smitty finally packed up and left for Atlanta.
He arrived when his sister was getting their brother to sign the papers to make her his P.O.A (Power of Attorney) in hopes of getting him out and into a private hospital. While she got him to sign, lawyers of the hospital claimed that Aaron Smith all ready had a P.O.A, their father. Which lead to a court room battle that Lucy hated to fight. Her vs. her father. Ryan Smith dragged in Lucy's dislike for him as a child and Smitty watched as his brother slowly began to become flustered and more insane. So he decided to go in a different way.
He became Mick Davis for the first time and after years of not running a scam in his life, Smitty set one up. It was like riding a bike really. Buy some marijuana, slit his wrists, break his hotel window with a chair and presto, Mick Davis was committed to the same hospital as his brother for a 72 hour hold. For 72 hours the older Smith brother could watch his baby brother's back. Tragically whatever was hunting Aaron soon was also hunting Smitty. At the time Smitty also wouldn't admit to it but he got a rush when he performed his first scam after so many years.
The creature turned out to be a wraith for it soon turned its sights on Smitty and on another patient who also just arrived, Felix Anders—a hunter. Clearly it believed Smitty to be the actual hunter for it targeted him first. He slowly went nuts, believing that he was back at home in Eureka with his father instead of trying to save his brother from a wraith. It was Felix that saved him from being a wraith meal but Smitty never forgave Felix for using him as bait for the wraith.
Meanwhile, the courtroom battle also seemed to swing in their favor. McNally agreed to testify for Lucy, as did their mother to their father's abuse and how she had remained silent allowing Lucy to win the right to be her brother's POA. Quickly she pulled Aaron from the hospital but left Smitty there to think about his stupidity for not only running a scam but faking a suicide and buy drugs. In Lucy's terms Smitty needed to be “Evaluated for his stupidity”. He agreed and when he was released, Smitty met up with his sister and his brother who had also been released to his sister's custody pending Aaron's moving into a group home due to his mental illness and both of their inabilities to care for him on a permanent basis. After making sure his brother was settled in the group home both Lucy and Smitty returned to their normal lives. Lucy returning to Bangor and Smitty returning to his life back in Los Angeles with Maxine.

He never watched another horror movie again thats for sure. It was in 2000 when he was stupid enough to answer his phone after not recognizing the number. Thinking it was Aaron, Smitty answered only to be greeted by Felix. The hunter told him that if he was to meet him at a location, the Roadhouse, in three weeks Smitty's questions would be answered. Stupidly, mainly because he wanted answers, Smitty agreed and his first of many trips to the Roadhouse began. It was there that he met with four other hunters, friends of Felix's and he was given a task of getting some ids from the local police in order to get in and investigate the death of a lawyer. Felix introduced him as a 'scammer', Smitty was quick to lay that rest and say it had been a one time thing but he soon found himself stealing four detective badges and a Crime Scene kit because it was just sitting there. He returned to the Roadhouse and for five hundred dollars and information Smitty was bought into the world of being a hunter.
For years that was the way it was. Hunters would ask him to get things and he would oblige for payment and information. It was Felix who took him on his first hunt, a simple salt and burn job in 2002 and Smitty found it interesting. He soon took on more jobs like it, riding with other hunters on occasion learning from them and they were glad to teach the scrounger instead of having to pay him. He hunted his first spirit alone in December of 2002 and it better than any scam he could have done. So he did both since both were like a drug to him.
Life came to a stand still when his partner announced she was pregnant in the early part of 2006. Maxine was always accepting that his 'business' took him out of town but with her being pregnant, Smitty decided to retire from hunting at least for a while. His contacts didn't approve and with in a week the scrounger was back working his magic. In all truth it didn't take them twisting his arm too much but he never did any more hunting. That ship had sailed he swore. His kid was going to have him around and yes he may be a scam artist but he wasn't going to hunt and risk bringing it home to his family. For the scrounger it worked. His son was born in November of 2006.
She entered his life in 2007. Her name was Jesse Rawson and like him she came from a background in being a scam artist and a thief. She was also a hunter. The two immediately stepped on each others toes when she began doing business in the Roadhouse with his clients. Both admitted that there was sparks and they teamed up after they proved useful together when they stole a group of badges from the FBI. While in New York, he also caved to the most basic of natures when dealing with the rush of the con and stealing. He slept with Jesse in her hotel room.
Returning to the Roadhouse, Smitty and Jesse agreed to team up and they became partners. Rarely did they do cases without each others blessings if they wanted to work separately and it was Jesse that dragged Smitty back into hunting where he was injured and nearly killed by a skin changer. Jesse not knowing what do or how to care for him, took him to the hospital and remained with him posing as his wife. Tragically, Smitty's girlfriend and mother of his son heard of the attack and came to see what had happened to him and learned of the affair through Jesse. The fight was epic and what Smitty remembers most was Jesse telling Maxine that he was stealing and doing everything he swore to her he wasn't. The power couple, as his sister called them, broke up and his son moved to Tampa with Maxine but Smitty refused to simply be a dead beat father. He would travel frequently to see him and while there see his brother as well.
Healing from the skin changer attack, Smitty and Jesse also stopped sleeping together but continued to work together. They worked together right up to when he got a phone call from his sister that he had a brother. Of course Smitty being sarcastic replied, that of course he had a brother. But in truth Lucy meant he had a half brother and that he was journalist in Chicago and apparently the man had stumbled on something. So Smitty left everything in Jesse's hands and moved to help his half brother, Reed Strahm, since his sister was unable too.
What Reed had stumbled on was the lifestyle. He had seen several hunters take care of a werewolf and was foolish enough to tell his editor. While he wrote for nothing but a tabloid the hunters that took care of the werewolf saw the man as a threat. Smitty saw that as a personal attack. So he stepped in and reminded them that attacking even his half brother was attacking him. It took a couple of rounds and a dunk in the lake with a few weights attached to them persuaded them to stop their efforts and leave his brother alone. But it still left Smitty with the problem of a journalist who knew about A-the hunting world and B-that he was in it. So he stayed in Chicago for a while and started to talk with his brother.
Reed was born to Heather Strahm and Ryan Smith while their father was on one of his many long distance scams. Smitty wasn't surprised really, their father had always been commenting about younger women even when around their mother so it seemed only fair that they probably had a half sibling around. But Reed hadn't even met his father or even expected there to be any other siblings out there. He was an only child who's mother had died of cancer when he was 21 so he was thankful to have family. He quickly added that he wouldn't publish the story now, knowing that Smitty was in “that life” and that Reed honestly had no desire to go into that life either.
Meanwhile back at the ranch, he had left everything scrounger wise in Jesse's hands. He had no idea what a mistake that was. Ids were not going to where they needed to be. Hunters were being taken for fools and some were become irate over it. A few called Smitty who in turn called Jesse, who never picked up. Fearing something bad, Smitty left Chicago and raced to find her. He did at their typical meeting place startling her and a large bag. When he confronted her, Jesse admitted that there was a better offer for the Ids. Some people who could pay more if Smitty would only let her make the deal. Smitty argued that it wasn't about the money, it never was about the money. In the end, Jesse threw the bag at him and Smitty shot her.

Thinking it was Aaron, Smitty answered only to be greeted by Felix. The hunter told him that if he was to meet him at a location, the Roadhouse, in three weeks Smitty's questions would be answered. Stupidly, mainly because he wanted answers, Smitty agreed and his first of many trips to the Roadhouse began. It was there that he met with four other hunters, friends of Felix's and he was given a task of getting some ids from the local police in order to get in and investigate the death of a lawyer. Felix introduced him as a 'scammer', Smitty was quick to lay that rest and say it had been a one time thing but he soon found himself stealing four detective badges and a Crime Scene kit because it was just sitting there. He returned to the Roadhouse and for five hundred dollars and information Smitty was bought into the world of being a hunter.
For years that was the way it was. Hunters would ask him to get things and he would oblige for payment and information. It was Felix who took him on his first hunt, a simple salt and burn job in 2002 and Smitty found it interesting. He soon took on more jobs like it, riding with other hunters on occasion learning from them and they were glad to teach the scrounger instead of having to pay him. He hunted his first spirit alone in December of 2002 and it better than any scam he could have done. So he did both since both were like a drug to him.
Life came to a stand still when his partner announced she was pregnant in the early part of 2006. Maxine was always accepting that his 'business' took him out of town but with her being pregnant, Smitty decided to retire from hunting at least for a while. His contacts didn't approve and with in a week the scrounger was back working his magic. In all truth it didn't take them twisting his arm too much but he never did any more hunting. That ship had sailed he swore. His kid was going to have him around and yes he may be a scam artist but he wasn't going to hunt and risk bringing it home to his family. For the scrounger it worked. His son was born in November of 2006.
She entered his life in 2007. Her name was Jesse Rawson and like him she came from a background in being a scam artist and a thief. She was also a hunter. The two immediately stepped on each others toes when she began doing business in the Roadhouse with his clients. Both admitted that there was sparks and they teamed up after they proved useful together when they stole a group of badges from the FBI. While in New York, he also caved to the most basic of natures when dealing with the rush of the con and stealing. He slept with Jesse in her hotel room.
Returning to the Roadhouse, Smitty and Jesse agreed to team up and they became partners. Rarely did they do cases without each others blessings if they wanted to work separately and it was Jesse that dragged Smitty back into hunting where he was injured and nearly killed by a skin changer. Jesse not knowing what do or how to care for him, took him to the hospital and remained with him posing as his wife. Tragically, Smitty's girlfriend and mother of his son heard of the attack and came to see what had happened to him and learned of the affair through Jesse. The fight was epic and what Smitty remembers most was Jesse telling Maxine that he was stealing and doing everything he swore to her he wasn't. The power couple, as his sister called them, broke up and his son moved to Tampa with Maxine but Smitty refused to simply be a dead beat father. He would travel frequently to see him and while there see his brother as well.
Healing from the skin changer attack, Smitty and Jesse also stopped sleeping together but continued to work together. They worked together right up to when he got a phone call from his sister that he had a brother. Of course Smitty being sarcastic replied, that of course he had a brother. But in truth Lucy meant he had a half brother and that he was journalist in Chicago and apparently the man had stumbled on something. So Smitty left everything in Jesse's hands and moved to help his half brother, Reed Strahm, since his sister was unable too.
What Reed had stumbled on was the lifestyle. He had seen several hunters take care of a werewolf and was foolish enough to tell his editor. While he wrote for nothing but a tabloid the hunters that took care of the werewolf saw the man as a threat. Smitty saw that as a personal attack. So he stepped in and reminded them that attacking even his half brother was attacking him. It took a couple of rounds and a dunk in the lake with a few weights attached to them persuaded them to stop their efforts and leave his brother alone. But it still left Smitty with the problem of a journalist who knew about A-the hunting world and B-that he was in it. So he stayed in Chicago for a while and started to talk with his brother.
Reed was born to Heather Strahm and Ryan Smith while their father was on one of his many long distance scams. Smitty wasn't surprised really, their father had always been commenting about younger women even when around their mother so it seemed only fair that they probably had a half sibling around. But Reed hadn't even met his father or even expected there to be any other siblings out there. He was an only child who's mother had died of cancer when he was 21 so he was thankful to have family. He quickly added that he wouldn't publish the story now, knowing that Smitty was in “that life” and that Reed honestly had no desire to go into that life either.
Meanwhile back at the ranch, he had left everything scrounger wise in Jesse's hands. He had no idea what a mistake that was. Ids were not going to where they needed to be. Hunters were being taken for fools and some were become irate over it. A few called Smitty who in turn called Jesse, who never picked up. Fearing something bad, Smitty left Chicago and raced to find her. He did at their typical meeting place startling her and a large bag. When he confronted her, Jesse admitted that there was a better offer for the Ids. Some people who could pay more if Smitty would only let her make the deal. Smitty argued that it wasn't about the money, it never was about the money. In the end, Jesse threw the bag at him and Smitty shot her.
He remained silent over the incident in San Antonio. Instead he just took the ids to the hunters they belonged too and dropped them off with a comment stating 'there was a mix up'. He hasn't taken a partner since then though. Save for a few of his more close friends if he needs to work with a few people to run a scam.
